Mug

ca. 1790

Chinese, Qianlong period (1735–96)

Hand-painted porcelain

5 in. H x 4 1/4 in. Dm (12.7 cm H x 10.2 cm Dm)

This blue and white Chinese porcelain mug is beautifully hand-painted in the ‘Nanking’ pattern, which, along with the famous ‘Willow’ pattern, was among the early standardized patterns for Chinese export porcelains. The pattern’s name comes from the port from which Chinese porcelains were shipped to the West. Indeed, the ‘Nanking’ pattern enjoyed great success in the West and was exported in huge quantities. The handle, molded in the form of a dragon, contributes to the overall chinoiserie effect of this mug, revealing Chinese export porcelain’s role to fulfil a European desire for exotic goods.
