Chinese porcelain had long been desired by the European market for its pure white body and stunning cobalt glaze. Chinese porcelains were exported to the West as early as the 16th century, with the height of export occurring in the 18th century. Europeans were able to make these wares their own with the addition of personalized armorials. This Chinese export armorial porcelain platter features a mysterious coat of arms, possibly belonging to a Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian family.
