Mug

ca. 1775

Chinese, Qianlong Period

Hand-painted porcelain with gilding

5 1/4 in. H x 4 3/8 in. Dm (13.5 cm H x 11 cm Dm)

This Chinese export porcelain mug is beautifully painted in cobalt blue glaze. The central design shows a Chinese landscape with a lone fisherman in the foreground. The hand-painted designs are highlighted with gilding. A floral border encircles the rim, an interesting geometric motif encircles the bottom. The body of the mug is covered in tiny raised dots, known as “chicken skin ground.” The handle is perhaps the most compelling feature of the mug, with two intertwined handles terminating in exquisitely molded flower sprigs.
