‘Chad’ teapot

Designed 1982

Glazed porcelain

11 3/4 in. H x 8 1/2 in. W x 4 1/4 in. D

Memphis Milano formed in the 1980s as a response to the stark minimalism of the previous decade. The group’s over-the-top, maximalistic designs were the epitome of kitsch, yet the public responded enthusiastically to this new style that in many ways became the aesthetic of the 80s. Matteo Thun’s oversized ‘Chad’ teapot shows Memphis Milano’s playful approach to design, and its irreverence to form following function. The teapot is completely dysfunctional, serving instead as a sculptural centerpiece.

“It’s that lightness of thought and lightness of product that we all should aspire to.”
