English majolica had a far-reaching influence on ceramicists throughout the world, with wares appearing in the United States and the Continent during the late nineteenth century. This jardinière, made by the French manufactory Sarreguemines in 1880-1890, displays the exoticizing japonisme style that became popular in the West at the end of the century. The jardinière’s style and colors share a similar language with its English counterparts, showing that the French were undergoing something of a majolique manie themselves.
