ca. 1915

Bone china with green lustre glazes and gilding

7 1/2 in. H x 3 1/2 Dm at widest point (19 cm H x 8.9 cm Dm)

Like many Western artists before her, Wedgwood designer Daisy Makeig-Jones was drawn to the arts and design of the Eastern world, and particularly to the region’s mythology and mystic symbolism. This vase’s shimmering green lustre exterior features the Kangxi tianlong, or ‘Celestial Dragon’, as it was called in the Wedgwood factory. In Chinese mythology, the tianlong is an enormous dragon said to hold up the heavens and guard the mansions of the gods. Accompanying the tianlong are flaming Sacred Pearls, which were believed to grant wishes.
