Like many English designers before her, Wedgwood designer Daisy Makeig-Jones was drawn to the arts and design of China and Japan, and particularly to the countries’ mythology and mystic symbolism. This bowl’s shimmering green lustre exterior displays traditional Chinese artistic motifs, including the “Sonorous Stone” from the Eight Treasures and the “Paired Fish” signifying blissful marriage from the Marvellous Objects of Good Augury. The mother-of-pearl lustre interior shows a phoenix in flight surrounded by clouds, an auspicious totem of luck, loyalty, and honesty in Chinese culture.
