When examining this bowl, it’s easy to see why Daisy Makeig-Jones’s whimsical lustrewares resonated so much with a British middle class who wished to escape the horrors of World War I. This lively bowl, covered in a beautiful ‘mixed blue’ lustre glaze, provides a retreat to an underwater world of swimming fish, lobsters, a gilded coral reef, and plenty of tiny bubbles. When comparing this bowl to Makeig-Jones’s Ordinary Lustre line, we can see the beginnings of experimentation in design, color, and composition that surface on her later, more elaborate Fairyland Lustres.
