This Iznik-style vase, made by Edmé Samson et Cie, is a fascinating study in the art of replication. The French manufactory, founded in 1845, specialized in ceramics inspired by or, more often, copied from museum pieces or examples of well-known European and Asian wares (among them Sevres, First Period Worcester, and Meissen). This particular vase was modeled after a 16th-century Turkish bottle vase in the collection of the Musée d’Ecouen. Samson’s vase, made in porcelain rather than Iznik pottery’s stonepaste fabric, is nevertheless an excellent remake of the 16th-century original. Decorated with traditional Persian motifs of saz leaves, roses, and tulips, the vase is also filled with playful details such as intentionally sparse gilding around the turquoise area of the neck to mimic the wear of the 16th-century vase, and an Arabic ‘S’ signature.
